I write this post as a much disappointed cricket fan. Most of you must have read or heard about the latest turn of events at the sixth season of the Indian Premier League.

For those of you who don’t know what the Indian Premier League is, it’s a month long season of cricketing between different franchises within India, and it has had a huge impact on the cricketing skills of the sportsmen in the country. I would even go to the extent of crediting IPL with success of the Indian team at the last Cricket World Cup.

The news that’s been doing the rounds are the facts and figures pointing at betting, spot fixing and money laundering that happens in and around IPL. As if that’s not enough, there is also a great amount of vulgarity and debauchery that follows at and after the post match booze parties, that’s been tarnishing the image of the IPL.

With many of these coming to light, the one question I have been challenged myself with is, does a system like this really deserve my praise and my attention. Yes, I do watch movies irrespective of the personal lifestyle the actors and actresses live by. Is IPL the same? Should I really be concerned about their standards and moral values when all I am cheering for is the sport of cricket? It’s something I haven’t been able to make up my mind on, but I would like to hear from you about the same.

This post is not written in any way to pull down a particular person, or an organization. God knows if it was not for His undeserving grace on my life, I’d have been much crazier than many of these. The intention of writing the post is to try and understand what went wrong with the IPL.

Guess, what had the answer!

(1 Timothy 6:10) “For the love of money is the root of all kinds of evil.”

This is not only true in the sports ground or the corporate offices but even on the church pulpits. Whenever the motivation to do something had only been a desire to make money or count profit, it has been the beginning of laying the foundations for a crazy disaster.

That’s what went wrong with the players, and cheerleaders and support staff at IPL. I believe the lesson we need to learn here should be something we would continue to uphold in the days to come, not just in cricket or other sports, but also in our everyday lives.

Are there things that we do purely for our love of this highly temporary entity called money? If yes, now is the time to repent of that!
