Pilate was Amazed
Mark 15:5 HCSB
But Jesus still did not answer anything, so Pilate was amazed.
Let’s ask the Lord to make us more and more like Him. Everything we do must be with that one goal in mind which is to become more and more like Him. That is why God created us, why Jesus died for us, that is why we’re listening to this podcast now, that is why we worship and do whatever we do here on earth, to be transformed into the likeness of Jesus.
The presence of the Holy Spirit is such a powerful catalyst in our life to help us become like Jesus.
Jesus was who He was because of the presence of the Holy Spirit, leading every aspect of His life, even filling Him up when He was low on energy or spiritual energy.
It is because we are not so dependant on God on our everyday life that we act like us and we don’t act like Jesus. But how is it that we act like ourselves and not like Jesus? Let’ look at the following example of how Jesus reacted to different situations. Mark 15:5 – “But Jesus still did not answer anything. So Pilate was amazed!“
This is amazing because we can imagine this if Jesus gave a brilliant speech or quoted the best writers of His time and spoke Roman History or Jewish theology and then Pilate was amazed, this is understandable. But here is a story of how Jesus did not answer anything, He did not utter anything and still Pilate was amazed. The reason Pilate was amazed was not because Jesus did not answer anything but because this was so counter cultural. Anybody that is attacked or accused or ridiculed in that culture would always retort and respond either with a plea of innocence or with rebellion. But here is Jesus who is not doing either of it. He is not saying He is innocent nor being arrogant towards the authority. He is just silent.
These are areas of our lives where we can become more and more like Jesus. Today as we live our life we will have opportunities to be silent or answer anything, to just remain calm and quiet and submissive. But what we need to do is be patient, long suffering, content even in the midst of all the trials. James 1:2 says – Do not just be content but consider it pure joy when you’re going through difficult circumstances.
Jesus is expecting us to live above and beyond our culture and to live against our culture. Not to hurt or harm them but to teach them a better way of life, heaven’s way of life. The fruit of the Holy Spirit is not arrogance, stubbornness, rebellion but it is patience. We need to be long suffering and remain submissive.
Let the Holy Spirit filter out everything that is not submissive, to let Him lead and guide our attitude, to lead and guide our behavior towards our friends, family, colleagues, people not like us, people who don’t have the same personalities or don’t share the same opinions as us. Our personality has to be reflected off of the Holy Spirit.
So let’s ask the Lord to make us more and more like Jesus and that is why we are here. This is the true meaning of discipleship, to be just like Him, talk like Him, act like Him and behave like Him.
