Reach Absolute Surrender

Acts 1:4,5 NLT
Once when he was eating with them, he commanded them, “Do not leave Jerusalem until the Father sends you the gift he promised, as I told you before. John baptized with water, but in just a few days you will be baptized with the Holy Spirit.”

Series: Receiving the Holy Spirit

We’ve been studying about the Holy Spirit this week. To experience revival, we need to go to the Holy Spirit. The Holy Spirit testifies to us about Jesus and shows us who He really is.

In the above verse, we see how much significance Jesus gave to the concept of being baptized by the Holy Spirit. Jesus told the apostles to not leave the city until they received the Holy Spirit.

If you want to serve God, you have to learn the principle of waiting upon God for the Holy Spirit. Wait on God, on the Holy Spirit, and ask Him to fill you afresh, to do something new in your heart, in your home, in your city. Do this every morning, not just once in awhile. When we wait on God like that, we are telling God that we are serious about the work He has assigned.

Many times we lose hope and begin to act in our flesh instead of waiting on the Holy Spirit. The Bible says there were 500 people at one point who saw the resurrected Jesus; 500 people who were convinced that Jesus is the Son of God, the Messiah. Yet on the day of Pentecost there were only 120 people who were waiting on the Holy Spirit. What happened to the remaining 380? They got busy with their lives, tired of the waiting.

The waiting period can at times cause us to give up. We need to be able to come to a place where we are willing to be uncomfortable and sacrifice the things that are ordinary and natural.

The disciples in the above verse were not just the 12 apostles; there were about 120 people waiting in the upper room of Mark where the promised Holy Spirit came. They were mostly Galileans and from other towns of Israel and Jesus told them to leave everything and stay in Jerusalem. All of them probably had to make many personal sacrifices to be there. As they did that, they received the outpouring of the Holy Spirit on the 7th day. What caused these disciples to really experience the move of God? They would have had to surrender many things day by day till they reached a point of absolute surrender. When they reached that point, the Holy Spirit was poured out.

What are the things you need to surrender everyday and every hour so that you can experience an increase of His presence and of the Holy Spirit in your life? May you have an overflow of the Holy Spirit in everything you do and everything you are.
