I was shocked to watch a video that was being shared on social networking sites, of how five people got swept away by the raging waters at Patalalpani, Indore, last month. All five of them tried their best to remain standing by holding on to each other. They had lots of people cheering and encouraging them in the background. But what they needed was not encouragement, but a good grounding. They needed a strong anchor.

Aren’t our spiritual lives similar? Don’t we also often face raging waters, destructive winds and devastating storms? What can help us in those times is not the people around us, but the ground we are standing on. How strong is your foundation? How trustworthy are your anchors? I would like to discuss a couple of things you cannot and should not neglect in your life ahead:

1. Anchored in God:There is no replacement for your personal relationship and walk with God. You have to be rooted and anchored in God Himself. God is your foundation. Jesus is the cornerstone on which you should be built! (1Pet 2:6) In Paul’s words, “For other foundation can no man lay than that is laid, which is Jesus Christ.”(1Co 3:11)

It is in this personal relationship with God, that you have an assurance of your salvation. The Spirit itself beareth witness with our spirit, that we are the children of God. (Rom 8:16) You have to take out time to know Him for yourself in prayer, in worship, in seeking Him, and in waiting on Him in order to avoid failing in that personal relationship you have with the Lord. (Matt 26:41)

2. Anchored with Good Theology:

I remember Dr.Jacob Cherian of Southern Asia Biblical College title his message “Theology is not a bad word” as opposed to so many christian ministers of today for whom the word theology is a taboo. In fact, it is very essential that we base our lives on good and thorough knowledge of God and His Word. I know ministers and godly men and woman who backslid due to bad experiences in life. The reason being that they was not anchored and grounded in good theology.

Good theology is not achieved by going to a bible college or by studying Greek and Hebrew terminologies. Good theology is about developing a complete and balanced understanding of the Scriptures. “All scripture is given by inspiration of God, and is profitable for doctrine, for reproof, for correction, for instruction in righteousness, That the man of God may be perfect, throughly furnished unto all good works” (2 Tim 3:16)

3.Anchored under Godly Leadership:

This is one of those most ignored aspects among ministers in the Kingdom today. Everybody loves to work and move independently. To be accountable to a leadership seems like a difficult task. Submitting to leadership doesn’t necessarily curtail your growth as some people think. Because your growth and promotion always comes from God.

Please remember that you are built upon the foundation of the apostles and prophets, with Jesus himself as the cornerstone. (Eph 2:20) Submitting to authority and being accountable makes you see many of the blind-spots of your life, your walk with God and the ministry he has entrusted you with. Ask God to give you discernment to help you know who is correcting you and who is manipulating you. Stick close to the ones who correct you. (Prov 15:32)

If your foundations are good, you will remain strong and will last long. In Bishop Jakes’ language: Come hell or high water, you will not be moved. Thanks Bro, Good theology is about studying the word completely! There are people who read one verse and make a doctrine/theology out of it. Studying and interpreting scriptures in the light of other scriptures is the way to develop a balanced understanding.
