One of the passages in the New Testament that has amazed me so much is the one I share below.
John 1:29, 35-37 NLT
[29] The next day John saw Jesus coming toward him and said, “Look! The Lamb of God Who takes away the sin of the world!
[35] The following day John was again standing with two of his disciples.
[36] As Jesus walked by, John looked at Him and declared, “Look! There is the Lamb of God!”
[37] When John’s two disciples heard this, they followed Jesus.
To give you the context of this scripture, this took place before the beginning of the ministry of Jesus, before He had any disciples, a crowd following, or anything that could set Him apart or make Him unique in the eyes of the people.
This is the introduction that John the Baptist gives about Jesus!
And the interesting fact about the same is that, it was not a very flamboyant title, nor was it something that people would desire to be called. When John called Jesus ‘the Lamb of God that would take the sin of the world’, he was indeed prophesying about the crucifixion of Jesus that was to happen in three and half years time.
“The Lamb of God” might be a very archaic title today, but back then in Israel, its meaning and implication was well understood. The Jews had been sacrificing animals for centuries in obedience to the law given by Moses. The law promised that at the sacrifice of a blemish-less animal, their sin would be hidden from the sight of God and that they would escape the punishment thereof.
So, when John called Jesus as the Lamb of God, it was well understood that it was going to be very tricky and dangerous to hang out with this Man, because He was going to be killed very soon. If you knew such a fact about your best friend, do you think you would even entertain the idea of continuing your friendship with the person? Moreover, it could put your life at risk too!
However, to everybody’s amazement, as the story unfolds, the two disciples of John who heard this, left John and began following Jesus instead!
Wow! The one truth that the two men had well understood to be able to make such a decision was that, the greatest problem or challenge mankind or humanity faced was SIN! It wasn’t environmental problems, nor the extinction of wild animals, neither economic crisis or recession, not even political instability. It was SIN!
And what they saw in Jesus was the solution and answer to that great enemy of human life; the Lamb of God, who would take away the sin of the world! And they immediately left everything else and followed Jesus!
Twenty centuries later, today after the world has already witnessed the life, death and resurrection of Jesus Christ, the offer still holds true. He does not only give you forgiveness from past sins, but also redemption from the very power of sin. All that it takes from your side is to believe in His name and accept Him as the Lord and saviour of your life. If you did that just now, you are on a lifetime journey of following His footsteps!
Different perspective…Good one pastor!
Thank You Kenneth! Your comments are always an encouragement!
It took me so many months to realise why Jesus is called Lamb of God! And why He is called lamb and not any other animal because a lamb is so innocent! Learning a lot Pastor but got a lot of unlearning to do …
I am really glad, God is speaking to you and teaching you insights.
