I Believe in Jesus, Can I Be Possessed by Demons?
The phenomenon of supernatural is quite intriguing. It’s a topic that’s been debated over several times. For some, it’s a realm that is tangible, for some it’s abstract, for some it’s merely psychiatric. However, there are far too many incidents that occur around the world, that it’s hard to brush it aside plainly, or discard the theory as tomfoolery. It’s not just a coincidence or a thing from the psychiatric books. The world of supernatural is real.
With the supernatural, come discussions of angels and demons, creatures that are often cited in the bible. Many times, we are not aware of the actuality of this world. We may not be comfortable addressing these topics. Or we may be living with the perspective that we are untouchable.
So, if there are demons, can one be possessed? If yes, can a believer be affected? Here’s a post with my thoughts on that.
Well, the reason any kind of evil exists is because of the presence and reality of satan. It obviously did not originate from God.
Whatever is good and perfect is a gift coming down to us from God our Father, who created all the lights in the heavens. He never changes or casts a shifting shadow. (James 1:17)
Jesus said, The thief’s (satan’s) purpose is to steal and kill and destroy. My purpose is to give them a rich and satisfying life. (John 10:10)
Now coming to the question of whether a person who believes in Jesus can ever be possessed by demons, it’s a matter of fact that both God and satan cannot control the same person and use them for their own purposes. Your loyalty to either has to be exclusive. So let’s consider the following things in order to address the question.
How Much Do You Believe?
It’s one thing to say that you believe in Jesus, and another thing to say that you believe everything that the Bible reveals about Jesus! There are many people who believe that Jesus was a good teacher and a great leader. But few believe Him in the entirety of what is revealed of Him in the scriptures. The only thing that adds authenticity to your faith in Jesus is your reliance on the Bible to know who Jesus really is!
Take time to search the gospels for a true and complete discovery of who Jesus is, what He said about Himself, what the disciples believed about Him, and more such insights.
Who Is Your Lord?
Moving from the previous point, there’s more to the story. Even demons believe in Jesus! They know who He really is and they have a really sound theology, much better than most preachers (or bloggers) of our generation, and yet they do not submit to Him. That shows us that just the realignment of the belief system is not enough. What is also necessary is the submission of our will and desires to Him.
Believing in the biblical Jesus and giving Him the Lordship over your life will totally change your identity. You are no longer a victim but a conqueror. You are no longer a sinner but the manifest righteousness of God.
Who Lives in You?
Here’s the promise that Jesus gave us. When we believe in Him and make Him our Lord, He will come in to our hearts and make His home with us, by the power of the Holy Spirit. No longer are we empty vessels or barren fields. Once saved, you and I have a new identity as the temple of God and a new assignment of hosting His presence within us through every season.
This is not as difficult or dangerous as it sounds. His presence in you is what will cause you to actually enjoy life and live your best for His glory. You will be more alive than you could ever imagine!
The Greater Power!
Now’s where we begin to start our discussion about how much influence a demon can have over a believer. If you haven’t answered the above three questions correctly, you can be absolutely sure that your life is like a desolate and empty house, begging for the infestation of demons. However, if Jesus, who is the Lord of your life, actually lives in you, then you have no cause or worry whatsoever. The reason being that His power is the greatest and the highest of all that exists in the universe.
I am not at all saying that your life is devoid of all demonic presence or attacks because of your allegiance to Jesus. In fact it is the other way around. Your loyalty to Jesus ensures that you are going to be a greater threat and trouble to the devil, that he would be willing to go to any extent to see you harmed, distracted and devoid of your focus on God.
Closing Doors to Demonic Presence
In seasons when you are facing an attack from our enemy, the devil, you need to inspect your heart to check if you have left an open door for demonic influence or presence in your life.
The problem with the church today is not that we don’t have strong believers, but that we don’t have discerning believers. It’s a problem if we are ignorant of the schemes of the evil one and are naive enough to fall prey to the serpent’s tricks. There are several things that can leave an open door to the demons. Pastor Vlad, founding pastor of City Bible Church, Sacramento, who specialises in ghostbusting, mentions a few of the open doors that we are in danger of leaving open, in this sermon. Let me list them out for you.
- Occult (Deuteronomy 27:15)
- Disrespect to parents (Deuteronomy 27:16)
- Injustice to weak and helpless (Deuteronomy 27:18-19)
- Illicit or unnatural sex or incest (Deuteronomy 27:20-23)
- Anti Semitism (Genesis 12:3)
- Accursed things (Deuteronomy 7:26)
- Stealing and Perjury (Zechariah 5:4)
- Stinginess towards God (Malachi 3:8-10)
- Offense (Matthew 18:34)
- Murmuring (Numbers 21:4-6)
Let me finish by extending this sacred invitation to you to come and lay down your life at the feet of Jesus, in service to His will for your life and spent in spending your desire in desiring for Him.
