Man of Faith v/s Man of Science!

Off late I have been hooked to this Netflix Series “Lost”, which by the way is an awesome thriller series to enjoy if you have time to spare. Towards the end of Season 1, there’s a conflict developed between John Locke and Dr. Jack Shepherd. Because one of them refers to himself as a man of faith whereas the other person refers to himself as the man of science! Now our question is which of these two actually holds true in the real world?

I am sure that we all battle these kind of thoughts and emotions on a regular basis. We know that God has called us to live by faith, walk by faith, please Him by faith, fight our battles on the earth through faith and attain all of God’s promises for our lives through faith. But faith usually doesn’t look or sound rational and logical. Does that mean that God wants us to abandon logic and reason completely to be able to follow Him?

Very often our understanding of faith is limited to the material things we aspire to possess or a state of being we want to achieve. The problem with such a limited and distorted understanding about faith is that, we end up in constant battles with a reality which is often the opposite of where our faith at that point is leading us.

Here’s my point, whenever our standard of faith is an object and not the person of Jesus, we are going to be tossed about in every direction imaginable. However, when Jesus becomes the center of our belief system, our motivation, our source and our purpose, it becomes rather easy to navigate through all of life’s circumstances with our faith in Him becoming the cornerstone of our spiritual understanding.

How does this practically apply to our everyday living? How does making the person of Jesus the center of our life solve all of our challenges and questions about the world around us? So many christians struggle to make sense of how the world was created in 6 days and how could everything in the bible be actually true. When we apply the logic from our experiences and our natural learnings, none of it seems to make any sense.

When I trust in Jesus, I don’t just do so as my teacher or my inspiration for life. I trust in Him as my Lord and my God! And since I call Him Lord, everything that He says becomes the building blocks of my life. If He agrees with the Torah that says that the world was created in 6 days, so will I. Now you may think that its naive for an educated person to believe so because of the enormous amount of scientific proof of the existence of life on the earth before the 6000 years mentioned in the Bible. But that’s the kind of trust that Jesus demands from us!

He says we gotta love God with all of our heart, soul and MIND! (Matt 22:37) Loving Jesus with all of our mind requires for us to bring every argument, every question, every scientific or social challenge we would have under the Lordship and the Leadership of His dictate. The more we try to reason outside of the framework of Jesus being the center of our lives, the more we will continue to fail and live without an answer to the purpose of our lives.

But when He takes the place that He alone deserves, when Jesus is enthroned, crowned, exalted, glorified, honoured, revered, worshipped, adored over every aspect of our lives, His wisdom begins to add colour to the otherwise black and white world of ours. We begin to see everything in a million different shades and perspectives. We cannot live without His wisdom and understanding.

Yes, being a man of science and living by logic seems like the normal thing to do for so many of us. Yet thats not the one thing that will help us to live our life. Faith in the only begotten son of God is the driving force behind our spirit man’s well being. I hope the proverbs I have quoted below will ignite an inspiration for you!

Proverbs 3:5-8 NLT

Trust in the Lord with all your heart;
do not depend on your own understanding.

Seek his will in all you do,
and he will show you which path to take.

Don’t be impressed with your own wisdom.
Instead, fear the Lord and turn away from evil.

Then you will have healing for your body
and strength for your bones.
