Transcript:

Pastor Sijo: Welcome to Church Talk. Today, we will be talking about the development of a core team in a church. The core team is the backbone of our church. There are several questions that will be addressed in today’s talk. We have Pastor Priji joining us for his insight on this topic.

Pastor Priji: It is great to have you Pastor Sijo. Thank you. We could move on to the questions.

Pastor Sijo: How important it is to have a core team in a church?

Pastor Priji: It is important how we develop and process the people for the core team. Jesus spent a whole night before He could appoint the twelve disciples who were His core team. They became the backbone of the spreading of the Gospel to various parts of the people. The core team was picked after prayer. In scriptures, an immediate successor of a leader plays a key role in the success of a movement or a downfall of a movement. In the story of Rehoboam, son of King Solomon. Gold, silver was abundant in the city and after the days of King Solomon was over, the people went to ask Rehoboam to take off their burden. King Rehoboam made the mistake of referring to the young people rather than the elderly people in the nation. He made a big mistake in selecting his core team. Even being the king of the nation, he needed a good core team to lead the nation in a direction. But the core team he had picked, gave him irrelevant advice and because of that, the entire nation was ripped from his leadership.
It is very necessary for us to pray, consider, plan before picking the core team. They will be the foundation of your ministry. The Church is coming together of the entire body. If there is no coordination in the body, it could crash down. Having a core team is important so as to align with the vision of the minister. Jesus’s core team managed the logistics of His ministry. To translate the grace of God, you require a certain set of people to carry it out.

Pastor Sijo: Wow, thank you. If a pastor is planning on developing a core team, what are the qualities must he/ she look for in a person in order to bring them?

Pastor Priji: At times, we are blinded by the things we see on the surface. We tend to see people with talent, administrative work, managing finances. All of this is secondary, but the primary thing is whether they are willing to follow their leader. Jesus never said Follow God, He asked them to follow Him. When they began following, they never had a revelation only eventually it did. Their willingness to follow is the key factor. Jesus was strict with His followers.
We bring it down to surface level. If they cannot follow the leader, it is a disaster to bring them in. It could be your spiritual sons & daughters and even in the same stream. Wait as long as it takes. Don’t look for qualifications, pick them up and qualify them. Look for people who are willing to follow you and sacrifice to follow you.

Pastor Sijo: That’s very helpful. What are the resources we could provide to equip the core team? And if there are any differences of opinion in the core team, how do we handle those situations?

Pastor Priji: If we are good at picking the right people, and fail to train them it ends disastrously. It is very important to train them, be available for them. Jesus created an atmosphere in which they had conversations and gave them perspectives and revelation. Jesus gave them to question them and bring one topic at a time. It is necessary to invest your resources.
There will be differences in the core team. The decision is only for the leader. It is bound to happen which helps in correction. We tend to deal with what is on the surface. Use every discussion, discouragement to train them.

Pastor Sijo: How do avoid Judas in the core team? How should we respond to people moving away?

Pastor Priji: God has given us the grace to see ahead of what is happening, through which we must prepare the rest of the team. We cannot avoid Judas, but prepare and teach them and let the word of God transform them. When someone goes away, you need to let them go. In their walking away, they will be promoting you. Continue to listen to His voice.

Pastor Sijo: Thank you, Dad. We had a beautiful time. Thank you listeners for joining us!
