Not Used to Them
1 Samuel 17:38-39 NLT
Then Saul gave David his own armor—a bronze helmet and a coat of mail.
David put it on, strapped the sword over it, and took a step or two to see what it was like, for he had never worn such things before. “I can’t go in these,” he protested to Saul. “I’m not used to them.” So David took them off again.

God wants to do something new in our lives every morning. However there are some traditions which are good and precious to hold on to. How do we identify good traditions?
In 1 Samuel 17:38,39, Scripture says Saul gave David the armor required for battle. This happened right before David had to fight Goliath
But David was not used to these and having fought many animals in the past without these weapons, he decided that he would be fine without them. He stuck to his tradition and came out victorious in the fight against Goliath, because God was with him.
Sometimes your traditions can work for you and for God’s glory. You should be able to identify traditions that are good. A tradition that is set in your heart and is from within is a good tradition. An outward tradition (what you wear, how you speak, etc) may not be a good thing to cling on to. Pray and find out why you do what you do.
The motive behind your traditions should not be to please people (Galatians 1:10 Obviously, I’m not trying to win the approval of people, but of God. If pleasing people were my goal, I would not be Christ’s servant). The reason for your tradition should be to get God’s approval and to please Him only. David wanted to bring down Goliath because Goliath was trying to fight his people and put down the name of God. David’s motive was to please God.
However, we should note that David did not fight all his life with stones. He started wearing armor and even used Goliath’s sword for many years in all his battles. Even if there are good traditions in your life, they should not stop you from growing beyond your traditions because God may have something greater in store for you.
Be willing to do something new and more powerful. David was willing to evolve that is why he became one of the greatest warriors and greatest kings of Israel.
Look for the traditions that are good (those that please God) and get rid of the ones that are not good (those that seek to please people).
