The Faulty Covenant

by | Aug 3, 2020 | Evangelism

If the first covenant had been faultless, there would have been no need for a second covenant to replace it.

– Hebrews 8:7 NLT

Transcript:

It is necessary for us to go searching into the depths of God’s heart to understand what He originally wanted to do with human relationships.
So often we think that God just wants us to obey a set of rules He set in the Bible and that we don’t need to do anything beyond what is asked of us to do. We see in the Bible that God didn’t create man to follow a set of rules, but it was to have an intimate relationship with God.
But when man failed to keep that intimate relationship with God, then, rules were put into place.

In Hebrews 8:7, the verse is talking about the Old covenant and the New covenant. Old covenant being the one God gave Moses on mount Sinai, sets of rules and regulations written on stone tablets by God’s finger.
In the verse, we see that the Bible indicates that the Old covenant isn’t faultless.

Now the question is – Is it possible that God can make a covenant with us which is faulty ?
Answer : Absolutely not.

Initially, it wasn’t God’s intention to have people follow rules and regulations, instead it was for them to have an intimate relationship with the Father. But it was people who caused God to set rules and regulations in place.
After Moses brought the Israelites out of Egypt to return to Canaan, the people told Moses thatGod is too fierce for them to have a relationship with, so Moses should go talk to God and come back with rules for the people to follow.
God wanted to reveal Himself to the Israelites just as He had done to Abraham, Issac and Jacob, but since the Israelites rejected a relationship with God, He had to give them a faulty covenant, as per their request.

Let us make sure we don’t reduce a relationship with God to a set of Do’s and Don’ts, but realise that who we are as children of God, is what determines an intimate relationship with the Father. Our identity is that we are children of God, the more we understand that, the deeper relationship we can have with the Father.
