The Green Wood

May 14, 2020 | Evangelism

Luke‬ ‭23:31‬ ‭HCSB‬‬
For if they do these things when the wood is green, what will happen when it is dry?

The Word for today is from Luke 23 verse 1

For if these things are done when the tree is green, what will happen when it is dry?”

This was a statement that Jesus made to the women who were crying and wailing when they heard that He was going to be crucified on the cross in Calvary. But surprisingly, Jesus looks at them and tells them that there is no point or no use in crying or wailing for Him as He has a purpose behind His death.

Jesus tells the women that His death can bring salvation and life to many people in the world. He also tells them not to cry for Him but instead cry for their children and their children’s children because the judgment they have brought upon them was not going to be easy.

And then Jesus makes this statement “For if these things are done when the tree is green, what will happen when it is dry?”

What Jesus wanted to convey was that the tree which is green, alive, flourishing and fruitful was Him and if He himself was going to die such a terrible death, what would happen to people who have no God, who have no righteousness, no life in them, no green in them and no presence of God in their lives?

Jesus tells them that He is the wood, the tree which is green but their children and their children’s children are ones who are dry and that they should cry and be concerned about them because they are the ones who don’t have life in them, they are the ones who do not have green and grace in them, and they are the ones who don’t have a relationship with God.

Ponder on this – do you have the life, the presence of God in you?

The Bible says that God made Adam out of the dust and after He made him, God breathed His breath inside Adam’s nostrils and it is after that Adam became a living person.

God’s breath – His presence is what made Adam alive. But this morning, if you feel dry and not green, invite Jesus into your life and ask Him to come into your heart. Jesus is all merciful and gracious to make you green and alive inside and out.

Can we pray this simple prayer to invite God and allow Him to work in us?

Dear Father, I believe what Jesus did for me on the cross, when He died for my sins, when He paid the price for my sins, when He paid the price for my disobedience. I believe that was for me and I receive His goodness, forgiveness and new life He bought for me when He was raised from the dead. I want you to be my Father and I want to be your child, in Jesus name, Amen.
