“then the Lord knows how to deliver the godly out of temptation and to keep the unrighteous under punishment for the day of judgment,” – 2 Peter 2:9
In today’s scripture you can see that it is making a comparison between the righteous and the unrighteous, the godly and the ungodly. If you read the previous few verse, there are names that are mentioned there. One of the names being is the name of Lot the nephew of Abraham. He was living in a land of Sodom and Gomorrah. And this land was full of wickedness, immortality, adultery and rebellion. The bible says that his soul was vexed and very distressed because of the immorality surrounding them. All his days he lived there, he did not have a peace of mind. There was a constant wrestling and a constant conflict between his spirit and soul. And if you know you will understand that why he was so ready to leave the city as soon as the angels came and invited them to get out! Much contrary to his wife who looked back and wanted to really enjoy for the one last time for all the amazing blessings and the providence that they had received because of this particular prosperous city that they were living in.
Another example would be Noah who was also in a similar time were the entire earth was filled with immorality and wickedness. And yet here is Noah who found a way to wrestle, to struggle, to fight against what was happening in the land. He did not get defiled by what was happening. He was waiting on God to take him out of it, to rescue him, to give him a better surrounding to live in, a better culture to be part of so that he doesn’t have to be tempted every single day. So that he doesn’t have to go through this constant vexation that was going on in his spirit every single day. These are the two examples of the godly men in this particular scripture.
And then to give us the examples of ungodliness and unrighteousness it talks about the angels who sinned against God. The angels who were thrown down from heaven and the bible says that now they were kept in chains. They were kept in bondage for the great judgement day that is about to come. In other words the punishment that they are enduring right now that is not the end, the end is the judgment, the ultimate thing that God will proclaim over their life. But the life that they are living right now, it may be a punishment. It may look like the end in itself but it is not the end. The punishment is only the period of waiting before the final judgment is proclaimed over their lives.
In the scripture today we can see the context what Apostle Peter had laid out for us. (2 Peter 2:9);
it says he knows how to keep a righteous Lot and a righteous Noah in the midst of all their temptations, in the midst of all their struggle and distress God knows how to keep them pure. He knows how to preserve them. He know how to still sustain them to not let them fall. He knows very well how to continue to feed them and to provide for them and to give them the grace that is required for them to stay out of that temptation. Just because you are godly doesn’t mean there will be no struggles, no vexation, no wrestling in your soul. Just because you are righteous does not mean that you will make no mistakes or that you will never make any sins. What it really means is that, that the Lord knows how to preserve the righteous. He knows how to preserve the godly ones.
Your righteousness is not based on the works that you do. Your righteousness is based on the works that Jesus did. And so if you really believe in your righteousness then you are preserved by the Lord. You will be protected by the Lord.
Everytime you make a mistake, everytime you struggle and are tempted, you need to go and receive the grace and the mercies that he is releasing for you that he has prepared for you.
And in wild contrast, the unrighteous, the bible says they are being kept in punishment. There entire lifetime being here is the punishment. The end is the great judgement that God will speak over them. But their entire lifetime here on the earth is a punishment. That is why when somebody get saved they get saved from a lifetime of punishment here on the earth into a lifestyle of wanting to now serve God and love God and live in the purposes of God.
We are thankful to the Lord for his glorious grace that choose you, redeemed you and forgives you. And to give you a life that is free of all your ancestral sin, of all your personal sins and it is filled with the courage and the boldness and the power and the ability to live now as an overcomer. Even when there are temptations, problems and struggle you have been given the grace to live with a victorious spirit. With a victorious response.
Father we thank you for you call us righteous, you call us godly and this is what your word says that you know how to deliver the godly out of temptation. So right now we receive this grace to be delivered from temptation. To be delivered from all kinds of distress that our soul goes through. We receive this help from your presence Lord. We give you all the glory and the honor. In Jesus mighty name we pray Amen.
